The newly formed Crown Research Institute, which brings together AgResearch, Maanaki Whenua – Landcare Research, Plant & Food Research, and Scion, is working closely with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), which is leading the response.
Bioeconomy Science Institute’s Dr Beccy Ganley, Kaihautū Tiriti (Director) for Better Border Biosecurity (B3), says experts across the Crown Research Institute are involved in a range of capacities.
“Some of our experts are providing specialist advice on the Technical Advisory Group, helping shape the eradication strategy, while others are assisting MPI in the field helping locate hornets and their nests or identify hornets.
“Given the urgency of this task, we are also reprioritising funding to ensure our research supports the response.”
She says collaboration is critical when managing biosecurity threats and incursions.
“It’s imperative we all work together if we have any chance of eliminating this pest.
“The Technical Advisory Group includes international experts with experience managing incursions of the yellow-legged hornet overseas. With this technical input, and continued support from the community, we believe we are well placed to eradicate the hornet.”
She asked the public please continue to assist by remaining vigilant and reporting any suspected sightings of hornets or their nests to report.mpi.govt.nz or 0800 809 966. If possible, please include a photo, location or specimen to assist the response team.

The Bioeconomy Science Institute is one of several partners involved in B3, a multi-partner, cooperative science collaboration that researches ways to reduce the entry and establishment of new pests in New Zealand.
