Maiangi Taiao: Uplifting nature through science
Maiangi Taiao reflects who we are and the role we seek to play in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond. It speaks to the responsibility of uplifting the natural world; the interconnectedness of land, water, people and knowledge; and delivering science with enduring benefit for nature and for future generations.
Our ingoa draws from Māori world views, where ‘taiao’ encompasses the living environment in its fullest sense, and ‘maiangi’ conveys the act of lifting, elevating, and giving voice.
Maiangi Taiao expresses our commitment to science that supports sustainable production within strengthened ecosystems and honours the relationships that underpin them.
The development of our ingoa was undertaken with care. Kaimahi (internal staff with whakapapa Māori) and some of our long-standing Māori partners contributed their whakaaro (thoughts) to ensure the name carries integrity, meaning and responsibility.
Maiangi Taiao is more than a name. It is a statement of intent. It reflects our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, to working alongside Māori as partners, and to science that creates prosperous, enduring opportunities for generations to come. We want our organisation and our science to harness and grow the economy in ways that benefit all New Zealanders. To do this we draw on broad and integrated scientific expertise to uplift nature.
