Dr Robyn Dynes, a principal scientist and farmer engagement specialist, was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to agricultural science.
The New Year’s Honours recognise individuals who have made exceptional contributions to their country, or excelled in their field. Several people were recognised this year for their contributions to the primary sector.
Dr Dynes says when she first received an email asking if she would accept the award, her first thought was “is this a phishing email?”
After letters from the Governor General and Prime Minister, she realised it was real, and “put it out of her mind”.
“I didn’t tell anyone. A text from a friend at 6am on New Year’s Eve prompted me to tell my husband and the kids to check the honours list.
“It’s been very surreal having so many people reach out to congratulate me and my family.”
Dr Dynes award-winning research spans farming systems, climate change and farmer decision-making.
She is a strong advocate for farmer engagement and serves on key boards and advisory groups, including Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Foundation for Arable Research, and the Southern Dairy Hub. She also mentors future leaders in the sector.
Her achievements have been widely recognised, including being one of only four women in 95 years to receive Lincoln University’s prestigious Bledisloe Medal, which she was presented last year.
