SCOPR is the Survey of Commercialisation Outcomes from Public Research, conducted annually by Knowledge Commercialisation Australasia. The 2024 report ranked 76 organisations – universities, medical research institutes and publicly-funded research organisations – across Australia and New Zealand in terms of commercialisation outcomes.
The Bioeconomy Science Institute’s Plant & Food Research Group ranked second (up from fourth in 2023) for commercialisation revenue – income from royalties on commercialised plant varieties, products, and technologies – and the AgResearch Group ranked ninth. The Bioeconomy Science Institute’s four Groups earnt a total of around A$85 million in commercialisation revenue over the year, exceeding Australia’s CSIRO, which ranked first, by more than A$14 million.
Mark Piper, Chief Executive of the Bioeconomy Science Institute, says the report shows the economic growth New Zealand delivers in commercially focused research. “Our research is delivering intellectual property that is making a difference to our sectors and supporting prosperity both within New Zealand and beyond. This is demonstrated by the on-going relationships we have with partners and customers who are willing to invest in our expertise, along with strong return on investment through royalties.”
Eighteen New Zealand organisations were included in the 2024 analysis, with a total research income of NZ$1.8 billion and more than 9,000 research staff.
As the Bioeconomy Science Institute was formed on 1 July 2025, the 2024 report includes data from the individual organisations that are now operating as Groups of the Institute.
