Researchers at the Bioeconomy Science Institute Maiangi Taiao are looking for healthy adults aged 18–50 to take part in a nutrition research study investigating how well key nutrients from different kiwifruit varieties are absorbed and used by the body.

Kiwifruit are naturally rich in nutrients such as folate, vitamin C, anthocyanins and potassium, which play important roles in supporting health and wellbeing. While we know kiwifruit contains these nutrients, we still have more to learn about how efficiently they are absorbed after eating different kiwifruit varieties.

This study will compare four kiwifruit cultivars with a nutrient supplement containing equivalent amounts of folate, vitamin C and potassium. The findings will help researchers better understand the nutritional benefits of kiwifruit and how food structure may influence nutrient absorption. The study may also provide new insights into how kiwifruit consumption affects wellbeing.

Receive up to $770 for taking part

Participants who complete the study will receive up to $770 in recognition of their time and contribution to this research:

  • $20 for the screening visit
  • $150 for each of the five study arms completed

What's involved?

Participants will take part in:

  • A short phone screening call
  • One in-person screening visit at our Palmerston North clinical facility
  • Five study visits over approximately two months

During each study visit you will:

  • Arrive after an overnight fast
  • Consume either a kiwifruit intervention or a nutrient supplement
  • Provide blood and urine samples throughout the day
  • Complete short mood questionnaires
  • Receive standardised meals on the study days

The study will investigate:

  • Zespri Green Hayward kiwifruit
  • Zespri SunGold kiwifruit
  • Zespri RubyRed kiwifruit
  • Red80 kiwifruit
  • A nutrient supplement containing folate, vitamin C and potassium

Study visits are conducted at the Bioeconomy Science Institute clinical research facility in Palmerston North.

Who can take part?

We're looking for healthy adults who:

  • Are aged 18–50 years
  • Can attend study visits in Palmerston North
  • Are willing to fast overnight before study visits

You may not be eligible if you:

  • Smoke or vape
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a chronic health condition
  • Have a gastrointestinal disease or ongoing digestive issues
  • Take medication that affects blood properties, mood or behaviour
  • Are allergic or intolerant to kiwifruit
  • Are currently participating in another research study

Additional eligibility criteria apply and will be discussed during screening.

Why take part?

By participating, you'll help researchers better understand how nutrients from whole foods are absorbed by the body and contribute to future nutrition and health research in New Zealand.
