Researchers at the Bioeconomy Science Institute Maiangi Taiao are seeking healthy adults aged 25–75 to take part in a nutrition research study investigating whether an apple extract can help reduce the rise in blood sugar which occurs after eating carbohydrate-rich foods.
Apples and apple extracts are naturally rich in compounds called polyphenols. Research suggests these compounds may slow carbohydrate digestion and absorption, resulting in a more gradual rise in blood sugar after eating.
This study will compare an apple extract with a placebo alongside two different carbohydrate drinks. By measuring participants’ blood glucose after each intervention, our researchers hope to better understand whether apple extract could help manage blood glucose levels after eating.
Receive up to $420 for taking part
Participants who complete the study will receive up to $420 cash as a koha/token of appreciation for their time:
- $20 for attending the screening visit
- $100 for each of the four study visits
What’s involved?
The study will take place over approximately one to two months and includes:
- A short phone screening call
- One in-person screening visit
- Four weekday-morning study visits
- At least three full days between each study visit
Before each study visit, you’ll need to fast overnight for at least 12 hours. Water consumption will not be restricted and is encouraged.
During each study visit, you will:
- Take two capsules containing either apple extract or a placebo
- Drink a carbohydrate drink containing either maltodextrin or sucrose
- Have your blood glucose measured using small finger-prick blood samples over approximately two hours
- Remain seated as much as possible during the visit
By the end of the study, you will have received each of the four study interventions once.
Study visits will be held at the Bioeconomy Science Institute Human Clinical Research Facility in Palmerston North.
Who can take part?
We’re looking for healthy adults who:
- Are aged 25–75 years
- Have a BMI between 25.0 and 34.9 kg/m²
- Have a fasting blood glucose level below 6.1 mmol/L – this will be checked during screening
You may not be eligible if you:
- Smoke or vape
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant in the near future
- Are allergic or intolerant to apple or ingredients in the placebo capsules
- Have a gastrointestinal disorder such as IBS or IBD
- Have a long-term chronic illness
- Take medication for weight loss or medication that affects blood sugar
Additional eligibility criteria apply and will be discussed with you during screening.
Why take part?
By participating, you’ll help our researchers better understand whether apple-derived compounds could influence the way the body responds to carbohydrates after eating.
Your contribution will support research into the relationship between food, nutrition and blood glucose.
There may be no direct health benefit to you from taking part in this study.
