Indigenous biodiversity and ecosystems are usually evaluated using metrics of extent and condition. In New Zealand some progress is being made on metrics to measure and report on natural ecosystem extent and on an ecosystem typology.
However, metrics of extent don't capture degradation of condition due to pressures on natural ecosystems, such as invasive species, climate change, pollution, and unsympathetic land uses.
Ecosystem condition is more complex and challenging to measure than ecosystem extent, but there have been international efforts to develop measures or indices of ecosystem or biodiversity condition.
This seminar reports on work for the Ministry for the Environment to evaluates internationally developed indices of ecosystem condition to determine their suitability for use in New Zealand.
